High and Dry
Boats come in many shapes and sizes in the islands. This beached boat, captured on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands (home of internationally reknowned Foxy’s bar and restaurant), is built in the same traditional rib and plank style that has served generations of islanders over the centuries. In its day, a boat such as this may have been used to row
an entire family to church service, help a fisherman bring in his daily catch
or deliver a cargo of food, livestock or construction material between neighboring
islands. Today it’s sweet hull design, deep keel and Caribbean colors
evoke a feeling of nostalgic past as well as a present sense of calming solitude. |
